Created for the Arizona Vivaldi Festival in the spring 2006, Carnival in Venice is an innovative musical based on the lively compositions of Venetian maestro Antonio Vivaldi. An original adventure love story, written by Helene Pouillon and Hans Kliphuis, Carnival In Venice takes you on a magical journey though a classical time. Juxtaposing ballet, ballroom, opera and timeless melodies, this pasticcio brings to life Vivaldi’s music, as you have never seen it before.

The classical and whimsical meet in the enchanted city of Venice Italy as Bianca and Giuseppe, 2 young Venetian nobles, celebrate their engagement in royal form with spectacular grand dances and full court regalia, while in the streets of Venice the carnival is in full swing.

Escaping their grand party to join the festivities at the Carnival, their young love will soon be tested when Giuseppe hides behind his mask to mingle with the lower classes carrying on the Spring tradition of the Venetian Masquerade.  There, wide eyed wonder gives way to danger as his pristine view of the world is challenged by the excitement and usual characters he encounters.

Giuseppe and his friends know they are in over their head when they go to the gypsy quarter, but what awaits them there is still unforeseen.

Created by acclaimed flamenco artist Julia Alcantara, the gypsy world is one of passion and allure that our elites have never been exposed to. The audience is mesmerized by whirling fire and seductive oriental dancers setting the stage for their enchanting leader Veronica. A mysterious character who is difficult to even label her as heroine, victim or antagonist, Giuseppe, is taken by her charisma and free spirited nature, and She by his regal demeanor.

Torn between the two worlds, our young lovers are forced to choose between the intertwined paths of the polished voice of the soprano and the seductive magic of the earthy gypsy dance.
